eCover Design Considerations

eCover Types

Here are some types of eCovers to consider.

Two Sided Box (a thick book in appearance)

This eCover type is used to indicate that there is more than one product in the package of materials. This may be an eBook, an audio file and an article.

Three Sided Box (clearly a box)

This eCover type is used to indicate that there are many products in the package. If you have produced a kit or a special program of materials you can use this representative packaging.

Book Cover (a book cover showing the pages)

This eCover type is used to indicate that the content of this package is a book. There is an expectation that the content is quite large say in the 50+ page range. It would be at least as big as a paperback book.

Magazine Cover (a thin book with no pages showing)

This eCover type is used to indicate that you are providing material such as you would find in a magazine, an eZine, or a Newsletter. You would likely use this to advertise the Newsletter you would like your customer to sign up for. You can use this same cover for a flat cover that is standing up so you only see the front of the cover.

CD/DVD Cover (the cover of the CD/DVD with the disk showing)

This eCover type is used to indicate that you are providing either a physical copy of a CD/DVD with a great deal of information on it or providing the downloadable version of the same amount of information. It may include an eBook, an audio tape, a series of articles or any combination of eProducts.

Special Report Cover (the cover show spiral binding on the side of the report)

This eCover type is used to indicate that you have something longer than an article and shorter than an eBook. You are probably looking at 5-30 pages. A white paper could use this cover. Use your own judgement as to size. You can use this graphic for workbooks or workshop handouts.

Thin Book (this thin eBook cover shows only a few of the pages)

This eCover type is used to indicate that the contents are more than a white paper but less than a full eBook. You are looking at 25-50 pages as a general guideline. There may be more than one product like a series of articles or a short book or a workbook.

Wide Box (this is an extra sized 3-sided box)

This eCover type is used to indicate that you have a great deal of material available in the package. You could use this if you are selling re-sale rights to a hundred products or have a huge product and plenty of bonuses as well.

The type of eCover you choose will depend on the number and kinds of products included in the full product. Do you have articles, reports, white papers, CD's, eBooks, software… in your full product?

Layout Considerations

The following is a list of general considerations for the author/producer of the eProduct:

Avoid too much open space
Balance the graphics and text so one doesn't dominate
Emphasize the title
Choose appropriate colors for background and fonts
Select appropriate font styles and sizes
Placement of your title and sub-titles
Author's name
Include the web site URL for your site
Decide what other information like the major benefit will be on the cover
Choose text enhancements like shadowing or outlining
Customize the top and/or side of the cover
Choose appropriate graphics
Avoid a cluttered appearance

In general, you want an eCover that is BOLD, CLEAN and ATTENTION-GETTING.

eCover Designs by eBook Authoring Services

What does eBook Authoring Services offer you?

The designs you see on this page and the previous page were designed by Paul Jackson. Paul is not a professional graphic designer. He uses software he has purchased and learned how to use for two reasons.

Paul creates many eBooks and eProducts so it was economically better to create his own eCovers rather than purchase them individually. He also had budget restraints when starting out.

Paul also wanted an opportunity to provide his clients who were also on a budget to have eCovers at a reasonable cost. It is imperative that you have an eCover and an attractive, effective on as well. Many of his clients have started out with his eCovers then had new ones created when they gained more financial security and/or when they moved into Print on Demand, self-publishing or standard publishing with paperback or hard cover books.

Paul provides eCover design as a service to his clients.

4.

eCover Generator

If you wish to invest in a do-it-yourself software Paul can personally recommend eCover Generator by the wildly successful Internet entrepreneur Armand Morin.

This is the software Paul uses to create his eCovers.

The Benefits of eCover Generator

  • It is reasonably priced.

  • It can be used without purchasing Adobe Photoshop which is a major advantage.

  • It is stand-alone software.

  • It is easy to use and easy to learn.

  • It comes from a very reputable source.

  • It will pay for itself quickly.

  • It is an investment rather than an expense.

  • It gives you total control over the production of your eCovers.

  • The disadvantage is that it will require a financial investment and some time to learn how to use the software.

    Generator Software’s eCover Generator

    Quick Description:

Providing a graphical representation of your digital products online is crucial to maximizing sales. The problem is, most of us are not graphic designers and even if we were, I’m sure we don’t want to spend the time continually making new eCovers.

That’s why the folks at Generator Software have made it very easy for us by developing a piece of software that will create original eCovers for your eBooks or software packages.

    What I Like:

This product offers a very cost effective alternative to hiring a graphic designer to create an eCover for you. It is extremely easy to use and creates a very professional cover with just a couple of clicks of the mouse.

You don’t have to be a professional designer or a computer whiz to use this and yet you can still create beautiful ecovers in a very short period of time.

Even if you have no design skills whatsoever, you’ll have comfort in knowing that eCover Generator comes complete with 44 image templates that you can modify to suit your needs (last time I checked, you could get a free upgrade to 346 templates with your purchase).

The other thing I like about this product from Generator Software is that they go beyond just the ordinary eCover. Built into this software are are 8 different “styles” of covers including ones for software packages, CD’s, special reports and more.

    Things To Watch For:

Keep your designs and your brand consistent. With so many options (especially with the free upgrade to over 300+ templates) it’s easy to go crazy with all kinds of different designs. My recommendation is to select a few designs that you like and look to keep your branding consistent with all your products. It will just add that little bit of professionalism to your products.

    Conclusion:

eCover Generator is a great product for anyone looking for a simple way to create eCovers. The software is very straightforward to use and within minutes you can have professional looking covers. As always, all Generator Software products are backed with a rock solid 30-day money back guarantee so even if you aren’t happy you can always get your money back. They also have a fantastic full-time support staff should you ever need assistance.

    eCover Options

    THE THREE CHOICES!

    Professional Graphic Designers

You can hire a professional graphic designer to create an eCover for you. The professional designed can also produce other graphic products to meet your needs. In terms of costs it can become rather expensive and if you are just starting out it may be too much for your budget. You can find professionals on the Internet or locally.

    Purchase eCover Software

You can purchase software that will allow you to produce your own eCovers. This is economical if you are going to be producing many of them. The drawback is that it will require an investment of time to learn how to use the software. This is much more economical than hiring a professional designer for each new product.

    eBook Authoring Services

You can have eBook Authoring Services produce eCovers for you with no obligation to purchase at a very reasonable cost. If you aren't intending to produce dozens of products this is worth considering. eBAS uses eCover software Paul has purchased and learned how to use.

If you have any questions at all please don't hesitate to CONTACT PAUL JACKSON.
