Site-marketing

Ebook authors must maximize the expert status they have earned authoring an eBook by building an Internet business around that eBook!

This website - eBook Authoring Services - is representative of the kind of site and business you can create for yourself. And there are hundreds and hundreds of other successful owners/webmasters on the Internet.

A Personal Story

I spent way too many hours over way too many months agonizing over who was going to build my website. I also agonized over how much work it would be to put together all the other products and services I might need for my site and my business.

I started by searching the Internet for how to build a website. If you have already done that you realize one of the problems of the Internet is "too much information". I was totally confused.

I then met with a couple of local web design companies and the webmasters who would build my site for me. The feeling I got from talking to them was that they could do the initial design of the site and host it with a server but when it came to making the changes in content I might like they were less than helpful. I realized it would take quite a bit of time to make this system work communicating what I wanted and how I wanted it on the site. They obviously didn't have the interest or passion for the site that I had. I would still be doing most of the work but the process was complicated by the appointments I would require to change the site. I didn't like that idea at all.

I then tried a webmaster who I found on the Internet. I was impressed by the sites she had created. Her speciality was in "the arts" with authors, artists, and singers. It looked like a good fit. After many hours of back and forth correspondence two things happened. I realized it would be very advantageous to have complete control of the site so I could make any and all changes 24/7. Total control was what I wanted. The second thing was the webmaster just stopped corresponding with me for several weeks leaving me in no-man's land. But the experience did teach me a great deal about what I wanted and needed for my site. The analysis process for my site was very helpful. I had a clearer picture of just was involved in creating and operating a site.

I then looked at one-page inexpensive sites that promised to have me up and running overnight - or sooner! Well, the learning curve was a little longer than that and again I continued to need additional services and products to set the site up the way I wanted it. These sites tended to look less impressive that many successful sites I had visited. You get what you pay for. There were hidden costs. I was learning!!!

About one month into my search for someone to build my site I entered "building a website" into a search engine and got Site Build It! (SiteSell.com). The home page and all the supporting pages impressed me with the thoroughness and the quality of the information. It helped too that they emphasized both building a site and building a business using one-stop shopping. It sounded good. SBI offered a site, a business plan, additional services and products, a reasonable price compared to the costs I'd researched and plenty of testimonials from satisfied customers and owners.

But… could I tackle the role of webmaster? I know nothing about building a site or a business for that matter. SBI provided everything I needed and more. I'd have to invest my time and effort to learn what I needed to learn. As a teacher by profession, I recognized the great job SBI had done with the teaching materials they provided.

But…I dismissed the idea. I wasn't ready to tackle it even though I was impressed. There must be another way!

Over the next several months, I kept searching - looking at literally dozens and dozens of options. Every few weeks I'd come back to SBI. My positive first impression became a positive second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth positive impression.

Lucky "7" - I took the plunge. My intuition told me SBI would give me what I wanted - a site and a business. It was a very reasonable financial investment and a 100% satisfaction guarantee or my money back if I was dissatisfied. There was plenty of help available as well. It looked good. I spent some more time exploring SBI then made the purchase.

The Results

It was the right choice for me.

It was the beginning of an incredible learning adventure.

It was one of the most satisfying experiences of my life.

It was my site and my business under my control 24/7.

Your Website

As an entrepreneurial author of your eBook you are faced with many decisions regarding your eBook and the business you intend to build around that eBook. There are two basic decisions regarding a website.

Decision # 1

Single Page or Multiple Page Site?

The first decision is how are you going to establish a presence on the Internet. The most obvious first step is to build a website. But is it a single page or multiple page site? You have seen both kinds of sites on the Internet.

The Single Page Site

Single Page Sites are designed to sell one product or service. These sites often attempt to capture the email addresses of visitors using a variety of offers. The site could offer an eZine, newsletter, free article, free eBook, CD or something else that will require the visitor to voluntarily trade her/his email address for the information provided by the site.

This is "permission-based" marketing where the relationship between the owner of the site and the visitor is established on a voluntary basis. Single page sites are often characterized as sales pages or ad copy. The success of these sites is based on either selling a product or service to visitors or capturing their email addresses.

In most cases, the visitor is not likely to return to the site again if they did not find anything of interest for them the first time.

The Multiple Page Site

Multiple page sites do everything that single page sites do - sell products and services as well as harvest permission-based email addresses - but in addition to that they offer something Internet visitors crave - information to help them solve their problems.

If the Internet is the current # 1 source of information then the quality and quantity of the CONTENT on your site is important. Having a site containing relevant content for your visitors which is constantly being updated on a regular basis entices and encourages visitors to bookmark and browse your site for information.

Add an eZine and/or a Blog to maintain regular contact with your visitor to eventually convert them into customers and clients. If your site is of interest to the visitor he/she will come back to your site again and again.

Both kinds of sites - single page and multiple page - work. In the long term CONTENT SELLS. Consider a multiple page site with a navigation bar to make navigating around your site as easy as possible.

Decision # 2

The Webmaster

There are two choices for webmaster - yourself or someone else?

There are obvious advantages to having someone else provide the webmaster and hosting for your site. The webmaster creates the site, usually hosts it and manages the site on a day to day basis.

Some problems with someone else or a company creating and operating the site for you include:

YOU are at the mercy of the webmaster as to when you can make changes or additions to your site.

YOU are usually obligated while creating your site to purchase additional software, products, and services in order to accomplish what you want for your business. Most hosts provide only a limited range of products for your assistance.

YOU will usually have to seek advice and coaching from a variety of sources because webmasters do not provide everything you will need to operate a site and build a business. Webmasters concentrate on the site building.

The bottom line is that, as an eBook author, you must build both a website and a business on the Internet. If a single company can provide the knowledge, skills and attitudes you require, you owe it to yourself to check it out. (Click the Logo)
